Self-Quizzing Boxes
Self-Quizzing Boxes are designed to help students actively recall information from memory rather than simply re-read their notes.
Research suggests that retrieving information strengthens memory and improves long-term retention. By regularly testing themselves on key knowledge, students are more likely to remember important concepts and apply them confidently in lessons and assessments.
Students are encouraged to:
Read the Learning Box carefully.
Cover the information.
Answer the self-quizzing questions from memory.
Check their responses and identify any gaps in understanding.
Revisit and practise regularly.
The aim is not to achieve perfection immediately, but to strengthen memory over time through regular retrieval and practice.
How Parents and Carers Can Help
You do not need to be an expert in the subject to support your child. One of the most effective things you can do is encourage them to use their Self-Quizzing Boxes regularly.
🗣 Ask the questions aloud and encourage your child to answer from memory.
📖 Listen to explanations and ask them to explain an idea in their own words.
✅ Check answers together and discuss any misconceptions or gaps.
🔄 Encourage regular practice rather than last-minute revision.
Remember, the goal is not to give your child the answers. The goal is to help them retrieve knowledge independently and identify what they need to revisit.
