British Values and SMSC

Promoting British Values at Uxbridge High School

At Uxbridge High School, we are committed to preparing students for life in modern Britain. The promotion of fundamental British values forms an important part of our Personal Development curriculum and is embedded throughout school life.

The fundamental British values are:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

These values underpin our inclusive school community and support students in becoming respectful, responsible and active citizens. They help create a culture where everyone feels safe, valued and able to succeed, regardless of their background, identity or beliefs.

Students develop their understanding of British values through the curriculum, assemblies, tutor time, enrichment activities, educational visits and student leadership opportunities. Through these experiences, students learn about their rights and responsibilities, develop respect for others and gain the confidence to participate positively in society.

We also provide a wide range of opportunities that broaden students’ experiences beyond the classroom. Through our electives programme, visits, external speakers, cultural events, charitable activities and community engagement projects, students develop an appreciation of diversity, explore different perspectives and strengthen their sense of belonging within both their local community and wider society.

At Uxbridge High School, British values are not taught in isolation; they are lived through the daily experiences, relationships and opportunities that shape our school community.

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is central to our vision of educating the whole student. SMSC forms an integral part of our Personal Development curriculum and supports students in becoming confident, reflective and compassionate young people.

Our values-based approach encourages students to develop the knowledge, skills and character needed to thrive in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world. Through SMSC, students learn how to build positive relationships, make informed decisions, contribute to their communities and look after their own wellbeing and that of others.

We aim to develop students who:

  • are reflective about their own beliefs, values and experiences;
  • show empathy, kindness and respect towards others;
  • understand the difference between right and wrong and act with integrity;
  • appreciate and celebrate diversity in all its forms;
  • contribute positively to their school and wider community;
  • understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens;
  • are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

SMSC development is promoted through every aspect of school life, including our curriculum, assemblies, enrichment programme, educational visits, student leadership opportunities, pastoral support, careers education, safeguarding programme and wider community partnerships.

Through SMSC and British values, we seek to develop young people who are confident in who they are, respectful of others and well prepared to make a positive contribution to modern Britain and the wider world.
