Languages
Languages are an integral and facilitating series of subjects which enable learners to develop intellectually and socially. The purpose of the languages curriculum at Uxbridge High School is to foster curiosity about the wider world, train and enhance literacy and problem-solving skills, and equip learners with a versatile skill set that will enable future success in a global and multicultural society.
In their study of languages students are encouraged to make cross-curricular links through a range of content which includes issues such as employment, human rights, the environment, different types of family, personal identity, and the arts and entertainment. They explore this content through a range of skills and learning methods they are familiar with from other subjects, such as sequencing, problem-solving, inference, verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills, and kinaesthetic activities. New technologies are also widely used to support in-class learning and improve upon the digital literacy of learners.
Uxbridge High School builds on and strengthens on the skills of understanding and interpreting written and spoken texts that students developed as part of their primary school curriculum.
Why study this subject?
Within our increasingly more interconnected world, Languages are more important than ever in enabling young people to communicate with others, develop cultural understanding and broaden their horizons to fully appreciate all the world has to offer. Through studying Spanish or French at UHS, students are developing an understanding and insight into two of the most influential European languages used across the world. The Spanish and French curriculums are specifically designed to equip students with a skill set valued by British and International employers and higher education providers as well as social and cultural skills which best enable students to thrive in their future lives.
What are the career opportunities for students who study this subject?
Studying a language opens up a myriad of career paths for students to explore due to the wide range of transferable skills the subject offers. Students with a Language qualification often set themselves apart in an ever-competitive job market. Common career paths facilitated by Languages include: Translation and Interpretation, Marketing, Broadcast journalism, Civil Service roles, Recruitment, Teaching and increasingly more roles within the AI sector. However, the scope for career development with Languages is limitless and this list is simply a starting place!
Beyond the classroom
The Languages department offers a wide range of extracurricular activities which aim to broaden students' language learning and cultural appreciation beyond the classroom. These include:
Lunch time foreign film club
Cinema trips for foreign language films
European day of Languages activities
Residential trips abroad such as the previously successful Valencia trip
We are always looking to expand upon our extracurricular offering with lots of new ideas on the horizon.
