The English curriculum area benefits from 10 state of the art classrooms and an additional space for 60 people to complete private study in the break out area.
The English team is fully committed to ensuring that all students achieve their full potential, enjoy the subject and develop a passion for reading. We encourage students to be independent learners and creative thinkers and develop a thirst for knowledge.
There are 11 full-time members of the English team and one part-time member; we also have an English trained HLTA supporting students with their progress in English.
years 7 and 8
In years 7 and 8, classes are mixed ability and our innovative and engaging schemes of work are designed to challenge all students of all aptitudes. The curriculum ensures that our students develop and build on skills in speaking and listening, reading and writing so that they are fully prepared for the transition from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4.
Students will also be taught explicit grammar lessons once a week.
To promote lifelong readers, students follow the Accelerated Reading programme, read every day in their English lesson and have a fortnightly library lesson. Students are also required to read for 60 minutes every week at home and complete their reading logs. Parents are expected to sign reading logs to confirm that the reading has been completed.
years 9, 10 and 11
In years 9 and 10, students study AQA English and English Literature, consisting of four examinations.
The curriculum is designed to build on skills developed at Key Stage 3 and to engage and challenge all students. Students will be assessed on their analytical, interpretive and grammatical skills, as well as their ability to write for specific audiences and purposes.
Students study the following fictional texts: Macbeth, An Inspector Calls, Christmas Carol and the Conflict and Poetry cluster in the AQA anthology. Additionally, students will study a range of unseen fictional extracts and non-fiction texts.
The English curriculum area supports students in achieving success at GCSE through additional period 6 lessons in year 11, specialised intervention programmes and enrichment opportunities.
