Work Related Learning
The Careers Department at Uxbridge High School is a busy and dynamic department, which plans and organises the Careers Education and Guidance (CEG) programme for all students from Year 7 upwards. The programme is in part delivered by their personal tutors through timetabled Citizenship lessons and in part by a range of work-related activities, involving support from outside agencies and the local business community.
Through the CEG programme, we aim to help our students to:
- Develop a better knowledge and understanding of themselves and make informed, reasoned decisions.
- Becoming aware of opportunities in education, training, work and adult life generally.
- Develop qualities and competences essential for fostering personal growth, social competence and employability.
- Successfully manage transitions to new roles and situations.
At Key Stage 3, students are introduced to particular work roles and activities and begin to investigate the knowledge and skills which people need at work. They consider the changing patterns of work and use occupational and labour market information to investigate opportunities.
At Key Stage 4, opportunities are made for students to put in to practice real-life knowledge and skills that they are developing. This enables them to consolidate previous work-related learning and gives them an insight into the range of skills, work roles, qualifications and attitudes needed in the world of work and to be considered in terms of their own personal career planning. This includes taking part in work experience and mock interviews.
Sixth Form students continue to have the support of the Careers Department in terms of careers presentations and courses, group guidance sessions and work experience for vocational courses. In addition, a variety of speakers from the world of industry, visiting lecture programme and trips and visits to universities.
We are also fortunate to enjoy the support of a number of employers who give generously of their time and expertise to support the CEG at Uxbridge High School.
