Science
The Science department is currently made up of ten specialist teachers and four laboratory technicians. We have ten laboratories and two prep rooms housed in the same building.
Key Stage 3 students follow the QCA Scheme. The Science Works course is used to study a range of units e.g. cells, acid reactions, energy, environment, elements, light and many more.
At Key Stage 4 Science is a core subject which students must study. Year 10 students follow the AQA GCSE CORE Science. In Year 11 they follow either AQA GCSE Additional Science or Edexcel BTEC First Certificate Applied Science. Some students follow AQA GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics. A range of modules are studied e.g. Environment, Metals, Electricity.
At Post 16 A Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics can be studied following the AQA GCE syllubi. Subject specialist teachers teach all classes in laboratories.
S4 is a redesigned Science IT suite. Interactive whiteboards and a computer linked to the school network is in every laboratory. Students are encouraged to research topics using ICT in lessons and out of school. Data logging is also carried out in Science lessons.
Special features of the department include extra curricular activities e.g. Year 6 CSI Summer School, Year 7 Science Club, Year 8 Gifted and Talented club, external speakers from Oxford University and visits to Brunel University; Field Study Centres; Thorpe Park; the Science Museum and Revision Conferences.
