Languages

Bonjour, Hello and iHola and welcome to Modern Foreign Languages at UHS.

During Year 7 students enjoy a two week ‘taster’ course in French, German and Spanish.  Before Christmas they will choose the language they wish to study at Key Stage 3 (until the end of Year 9).  In year 8 your child will continue French, Spanish or German and Gifted and Talented Linguists will also have timetabled lessons in Latin or Mandarin.  At the end of Year 9 all students will take ASSET LANGUAGES exams and every student at Uxbridge High School will leave Key Stage 3 with a qualification in the language they have studied.  During Years 10 and 11, students can choose to continue one language and we run courses in French, German, Spanish and Latin.  At A Level, all three languages are offered in the Sixth Form, both at AS and A2 Level.

Gifted and Talented students will be invited to after school and Mandarin clubs.  These students will also be encouraged to take up a second language at GCSE.

The Languages curriculum area boasts an array of activities for students at UHS.  Students are invited to weekly after school sessions in Spanish, French and German and gifted students are invited to begin a language they do not currently study.  Mandarin and Latin clubs are run by specialists where students can learn about the history and culture, as well as the language.

Trips abroad over the past few years have included: Paris, Normandy, Munich, Emden and  Barcelona.  We have made local visits within London to a Bavarian restaurant, a tapas restaurant and a Flamenco festival at Sadlers’ Wells.

The Languages curriculum area has forged strong links with local primary schools with an aim to improve transition between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 language learning.  Every term we invite a local primary school to take part in a language transition morning where Uxbridge High School students and staff run workshops which promote languages and gives the Year 5 and 6 students a taste of secondary school life.
