Design Technology
The Design Technology curriculum area is staffed by eight members of teaching staff and supported by two technicians, all of whom have a range of expertise and a shared enthusiasm for the subject. Within Design Technology students are taught to follow the design process and are encouraged to design imaginative and creative, individualised products.
At Key Stage 3 students will study all aspects of Design Technology – this includes Resistant Materials, Electronics, Graphic Products and Textiles. Students will design and produce a range of products as they develop their skills using a range of techniques. They will also get the opportunity to design and produce products using the CAD/CAM facilities within the department.
At Key Stage 4 students have the opportunity to choose which area of Design Technology they wish to specialise in and will study for either a GCSE or BTEC in their chosen area. The projects at this level are designed to challenge and engage the students. It is during these courses that students become independent project managers taking products from concept to reality.
At Key Stage 5 students can choose to study for an A Level in Product Design or a BTEC National Certificate in Engineering. The courses allow students to explore further the world of design and industry.
Extra curricular activities include the opportunity to participate in both Local and National competitions, workshops and guest lectures are held by outside companies (e.g. Designers in Residence and British Airways) and visits to design focussed museums.
